Whilst we have left our spiritual homes, the members of the West Country branch can take comfort in the knowledge that the word has, and continues to spread through the land of the 'Carrot Crunchers'. The West Country covers a vast area of our beloved England, the unofficial capital is Taunton (Somerset), base of the Wurzels yet more importantly the home of the West Country Branch of the Charlton Athletic Supporters Club.
The Branch was formed back in May 1995, the dream of an ex- pat whose devotion to his beloved CAFC saw him advertise in home and away programmes, looking for other kindred spirits, looking to share their previous experiences and enjoy new in the adoration of the mighty Charlton Athletic FC. Slowly they came from Exeter, Bristol, Truro, Salisbury, Weston Super Mare and Weymouth. The original 60 grew to in excess of 200 in the premier league days and still has a healthy membership of 100. Many a red and white scarf can be seen hanging from Cars, mini-buses or Coaches on either the M4 or the M5 on matchdays as we travel to Mecca or other less spiritual venues. Due to the vast expanse of land covered by the branch it is logistically difficult to have such large gatherings as we would like, yet you can guarantee representatives from S.Glos, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Devon and Cornwall and a warm welcome.
The shared experiences of the past and anticipation of the future provide for a great night out. Our President for 18 years was Mrs Gladys Dutton daughter of the great Jimmy Seed but following her sad passing in 2015 we are honoured to have long-time Charlton supporter, Director, club chairman and friend of the branch Martin Simons as our President, our Vice president is Gary Nelson who needs little introduction. We have been graced by the presence of Derek Ufton and have been blessed by membership of such greats as Jimmy Giles and Eddie Marsh (a nicer man you will never meet). Over the years the club have done well by us, we are proud of our association and link with what has and will continue to be such a large part of our lives, despite the distance. Any other unfortunates whose circumstances dictate leaving SE7, please get in touch it'll be a pleasure.
